Shiny aisles of skincare and haircare held branded products in front of me like having a treat in front of a dog. Enamored, I wanted to try all these products, thinking they were the ultimate solution for improving my skin and hair. My mother’s hand intervened as I reached out for the most appealing face cleanser.
She scanned the ingredients of the products, nodding in disapproval. I immediately objected and described how immensely-beneficial these products would be for me. I desperately advocated purchasing the cleansers like a spokesperson for the beauty brands.
My mother confidently ensured that her knowledge of natural skin and hair remedies would outdo any product in the store. Defeated, I put the cleanser back on the shelf.
Little did I know that my mother’s secrets were the most healthy, convenient, and catalytic to improving my skin and hair. All her ways were completely natural and more effective than any chemical-based solution.
I feel fortunate to share some of her tricks with you! Here they are:
*PLEASE patch test these homemade products on your hand before using on the face to check for allergies or skin reactions!*
- Turmeric – Chickpea Flour Face Mask
- In a small bowl, combine 1/2 teaspon turmeric powder, 1 tablespoon chickpea flour, and 1.5 tablespoon of plain yogurt. Apply the mixture to clean face and allow it to dry. Wash off with warm water, dry your face, and moisturize.
- This facemask, used once every two weeks, will bring a glow to your face as well as remove blemishes.
- Yogurt, Olive Oil, and Castor Oil Hair Mask
- In a bowl, mix together 1 cup yogurt, 1/4 cup olive oil, and 2 tablespoons of castor oil. Apply this to hair thoroughly at least 30 minutes prior to washing hair. The longer you wear the hair mask, the more effective it will be. Rinse off the mask using water.
- This mask is full of omega 3s and 6s, probiotics, and fatty acids that help strengthen and shine your hair.
- Moringa
- Moringa is a plant that is rich in Vitamin A, E, and C, which are all favorable for healthy skin. It is packed with nutrients, antioxidants, and oleic acid, which supplement strong hair and firm skin. The plant’s properties nourish and protect your hair from heat damage.
- Moringa can be consumed or applied in many ways, such as pills, oils, powders, or even cooked in your meals.
Consistently using my mother’s beauty hacks showed massive improvement in my skin and hair in just a few weeks. My hair became more lustrous, my skin was brighter, and I felt cleaner overall. Incorporating as many natural, whole-food beauty essentials into my hygiene routine makes me feel and look good on the inside and out!
I don’t think any store-bought item could ever make me feel as fresh and clean as homemade fixes. I encourage you to approach your skin, hair, and overall beauty with more hand-made, down-to-earth items.
