Why Purpose is Key to Making a Difference in Your Community

Volunteering as a patient safety rounder, pediatric emergency department, and crisis text line counselor has shown me the impact of purpose-driven work firsthand. Purpose gives us a reason to wake up and strive for something greater than ourselves. It propels us to make a difference in our communities and beyond.

But what is purpose, exactly? Purpose is not just about achieving a specific goal or fulfilling a particular role. It is about aligning our values and passions with our actions. We are motivated by a deep sense of meaning and fulfillment when we have purpose. We feel like we are contributing to something bigger than ourselves.

Purpose has been an essential part of my journey as a pre-med student. It has helped me to stay focused and motivated even when faced with complex challenges. When I volunteer in the pediatric emergency department, for example, I know that every moment spent helping a child or comforting a worried parent makes a real difference. And when I counsel someone in crisis through the text line, I know I provide a lifeline for someone struggling.
But the purpose is not just about the impact we make at the moment. It is also about the legacy we leave behind. When we act purposefully, we create a ripple effect that can last long after we are gone. By inspiring others to work intentionally, we create a movement of positive change.

So how can we cultivate purpose in our lives and work? Here are a few tips:

  1. Start with your values: What matters most to you? What do you care deeply about? Your values are the foundation of your purpose.
  2. Find your passion: What excites you? What energizes you? Your passion is what gives your purpose direction and momentum.
  3. Take action: Purpose without effort is just a dream. Take concrete steps towards your purpose, even if they are initially small.
  4. Inspire others: Purpose is contagious. Share your passion with others and inspire them to act with purpose too.

In conclusion, the purpose is vital to making a difference in your community. It gives us a reason to act, a sense of meaning and fulfillment, and a legacy that can inspire others to follow in our footsteps. Whether you are a pre-med student like me or a seasoned healthcare professional, purpose can guide your journey to creating positive change in the world.
